Felicia Bianca Daries, a 40‑year‑old mother of two, and Flourish host at Postdene clinic in Postmasburg, understands the struggles of motherhood in a community where resources are scarce. Fourteen years ago, she lost her baby after seven months of pregnancy, which she described as “a grief she carried largely alone”. That loss became the foundation of her mission: to walk alongside other mothers so they never feel unsupported.
Her story reminds us that, alongside Mother’s Day in May, we also shine a light on maternal health. Mothers need more than recognition they need support systems that carry them from conception through to their children’s growth, ensuring they are heard, valued, and cared for at every stage.
Felicia’s Initiative: Meeting Immediate Needs
Alongside the work of Flourish, Felicia realised that information and guidance alone were not enough. Mothers were still struggling with urgent needs: food, hygiene products, and baby essentials. Flourish could provide knowledge and encouragement, but the community also needed to step in with practical support.
Out of compassion, Felicia began mobilising for donations. Through her initiative, mothers visiting the clinic can quietly access donated clothes, toiletries, and nutritional items. Seeds are also distributed so families can grow their own food. In this way, dignity is preserved, and mothers know they are not alone.
Carrying Grief Together
Over the years, Felicia realised that there are areas where programmes like Flourish cannot reach, especially when it comes to supporting grieving mothers.
In moments of loss, families may face stillbirths and have little means to arrange burials. In these times, Felicia steps in. She mobilises donations, gathers community support, and ensures that families are not left to carry their grief alone.
One of her quiet gestures is offering a candle to grieving mothers as a symbol of honour, remembrance, and care. Her own experience of loss makes this act deeply meaningful, and mothers know that they are seen, supported, and never alone.
Building a Movement of Support
What began with one support space for Flourish sessions has grown into a wider community‑supported initiative. Residents now contribute clothing and food, ensuring that mothers can meet their families’ basic needs with dignity. This collective effort has already changed lives, with young mothers who once felt trapped by circumstance now returning to school, empowered by the knowledge that their community stands behind them.
The Flourish programme gave Felicia a platform, and she has used it to build a channel of compassion and support that extends beyond the sessions themselves. Looking ahead, her dream is to expand into a dedicated daycare centre, so young mothers can pursue education or work without sacrificing the care of their children.
Gratitude and Call to Action
Felicia is deeply grateful to those who have already supported her work: “I want to thank everyone who has already supported this initiative. Your kindness has brought hope to many mothers. With your continued help, we can reach even more families and make sure every mom feels cared for.”
Her plea is simple but powerful: every packet of flour, every baby outfit, every act of kindness matters. She calls on individuals, businesses, and organisations to continue contributing, whether through donations of food, baby essentials, toiletries, or financial support during times of bereavement.
Felicia’s initiative shows how one woman’s compassion, rooted in her own experience, can ripple outward into a chain of support. By stepping forward, she has inspired the community to share ownership of its challenges and solutions, proving that when grief is carried together and support is offered collectively, dignity and hope can be restored.
