Die Kuil Intermediate School, located in the suburb of Kuilsville in Danielskuil in the Northern Cape, stands as an important pillar within the local community and a valued stakeholder of the Lesedi Solar Park Trust. Established in 1978, the school has been serving the community for decades, providing quality education to 1 341 learners from Grade R to Grade 8, supported by a team of 37 educators and 4 support staff. Despite the challenges often faced in previously disadvantaged communities, the school continues to play a vital role in shaping young minds and creating opportunities for its learners. As a funding organisation, the Lesedi Solar Park Trust is committed to supporting communities in ways that promote dignity, wellbeing and long-term development, from conception to career, working in partnership with schools and local stakeholders to create safe and supportive environments where children are able to learn and grow.
Beyond academics, Die Kuil Intermediate School is a space of care for many young children. The school runs a feeding scheme that provides daily meals to at least 1420 learners from Monday to Friday, ensuring that learners are sustained and able to focus in class. The school has also achieved notable success in both academics and sports. One of its learners La-Roche Moatshe, placed fourth nationally in the SANLAM-WOW Spelling competition, while others have represented the school at provincial levels in athletics and cross-country.
Despite its important role, the school recently faced a significant challenge regarding the condition of its bathroom facilities. The toilets had deteriorated to a point where they were no longer hygienic or safe for use. This created daily discomfort for learners and posed potential health risks, making it difficult for them to fully concentrate in class. Beyond the physical state of the facilities, the situation also affected learners’ sense of dignity and confidence within the school environment.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, the school reached out for support. Following a site assessment, it was confirmed that immediate intervention was required. Through the Lesedi Solar Park Trust’s Relief Fund, a sanitation improvement project was approved, and refurbishment work was undertaken to restore the bathroom facilities. The focus of the project was to ensure that learners have access to clean, safe and functional spaces that they can rely on every day.
The transformation has had a meaningful impact on the daily experience of learners. The refurbished facilities are now hygienic, well-maintained and fully functional, allowing learners to use them with confidence and comfort. With this basic need restored, learners are better able to remain focused in class and engage fully in their education without unnecessary distraction.
Importantly, the improvements have gone beyond infrastructure. Access to clean and safe sanitation has helped restore a sense of dignity within the school. It reinforces an environment where learners feel respected, cared for and valued of which are essential foundation for both personal development and academic success.
