Let Us Spot, Stop, and Prevent Stunting

Did you know that nearly one in four children under the age of five in South Africa suffers from stunting? This silent condition may not be easy to see at first, but it has lasting effects on our children’s futures. Stunting is caused by poor nutrition and care during a child’s first one thousand days of life, from pregnancy to their second birthday. It does not just affect how tall a child grows. It can hold them back in school, impact their health, and limit their full potential.

But here is the good news: stunting is preventable and even reversible when we act early.

That is why the Lesedi Solar Park Trust is proud to support Grow Great Champions, a movement that brings together our local nurses, doctors, and Community Health Workers to take action. Working closely with the Department of Health, we are building a strong support system for families right here in Lesedi.

How Do You Know if a Child Is Stunted?

  • The child is shorter than other children of the same age.
  • The child may get sick often.
  • The child might struggle to keep up in learning or play.

If you are unsure, speak to your local clinic or Community Health Worker. It is always better to check early.

Meet Your Champions in the Community

More than thirty Community Health Workers from across Lesedi have already completed new training with Grow Great. They have strengthened their skills to:

  • Support expecting mothers
  • Recognise early signs of trauma, alcohol or substance abuse
  • Identify stunting in babies and toddlers
  • Refer families to the correct services quickly

These Community Health Workers are now more prepared and motivated than ever to walk alongside families and provide the support they need.

Where Can You Go for Help?

If you are concerned about your child’s growth, or if you are an expecting mother in need of support, here is what you can do:

  • Speak to your local Community Health Worker
  • Visit your nearest clinic
  • Ask about stunting checks and growth monitoring

A dedicated Coordinator and Enrolled Nurse will soon be appointed to support our communities directly and make sure that no child is left behind.

Lesedi: Let Us Grow Great Together

This programme is more than just training. It is a community movement. With healthcare workers, clinics, and families working together, we are making sure that every child in Lesedi receives the nutrition, care, and love they need to grow into their full potential.

Let us make stunting a thing of the past.
