Jeanette Mqomo, the Programme Manager for the Kgatelopele Social Development Forum (KSDF) in Danielskuil, stands as a true advocate for change, making a significant impact on community development. Her passion for service and community upliftment stems from her upbringing on the Dunn Roven farm in the Kgatelopele Municipality, where her maternal grandparents instilled in her a deep sense of responsibility and care for others. Reflecting on her inspiration, Jeanette shared, “My love and involvement in community work were shaped by my grandparents, who taught me the importance of providing for and supporting family and friends.”

Under Jeanette’s leadership, KSDF has flourished, expanding its reach and services. The forum operates a variety of community upliftment initiatives, including a Community Advice office, a food garden, a soup kitchen, and crucial support services. KSDF is one of the community-based organizations (CBOs) supported by The Social Change Assistance Trust (SCAT) in partnership with The Lesedi Solar Park Trust. Since joining SCAT, KSDF has benefited from extensive training and support in areas such as developmental skills, food gardening, time management, leadership, human resources, planning, social auxiliary work, fundraising, and climate change.

One of the most critical training programs provided by SCAT to its supported CBOs focuses on Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Addressing GBV is a daily challenge in many communities, and this training aims to strengthen advocacy, enhance response measures, and provide much-needed support to those affected.

Jeanette’s dedication to the cause was further recognized when she was selected by SCAT’s board to join the Commission on the Status of Women and Parallel Event held in New York on March 14, 2024. This event explored the connections between GBV, food security, and access to justice. Jeanette described the experience as memorable and educational, highlighting the intersection of women’s tenure rights violations, economic and social security, and mental and physical health impacts. She noted, “State institutions often lack awareness and capacity to respond to these rights violations. In Kenya, they have piloted an innovative approach where women can report tenure rights violations and GBV through a digital reporting system called Haki Ardhi. This tool improves responses and policies towards gender equality and empowerment based on real-time data.”

As the fight against GBV continues, the empowerment and support provided to organizations like KSDF bring hope and strength to our communities. Jeanette Mqomo’s leadership and the resources from partnerships like SCAT and The Lesedi Solar Park Trust play a vital role in advancing this crucial work.
