Empowering futures through development

A new partnership between The Lesedi Solar Park Trust and WordWorks aims to strengthen the delivery of the literacy curriculum in Setswana Grade R classes in the region.

Wordworks is a South African non-profit organisation that focuses on early language and literacy development in the first eight years of children’s lives, while developing, producing and distributing innovative, high quality multilingual materials to support early language and literacy learning.

The program sets out to advance early childhood literacy in home language, helping children develop vocabulary, self-expression, and reading comprehension.

Wordworks makes use of the Stellar Home Language program which is a CAPS-aligned programme for Grade R teachers working with 5-6 year old children. The program is designed to enhance language and emergent literacy in Grade R classrooms and will be implemented in four schools within the Lesedi catchment namely; Refentse Primary, H.T.T Bidi Memorial, Danielskuil Intermediate, and Shaleje Primary.

Earlier this week, the Wordworks team facilitated the orientation to teachers and school representatives. In attendance were HODs, Principals and Grade R teachers from the schools. The rest of this week will consist of a situational analysis where the team will visit each school to assess the resources they currently have in place.

The next phase of the program will include training for the Grade R teachers, after which program implementation will begin. The trainer will continue to visit the schools during implementation and offer support.
